A journey to Mexico and ascent of the highest volcano in North America – Orizaba! This is more of a travel & mountaineering combo – as we’ll explore colonial Mexico City, visit the ghost town of Teotihuacan, and stroll through the picturesque city of Puebla. The program also includes an acclimatization hike to Sierra Negra volcano (4550 m). The climb to Orizaba itself takes place on a glacier (using crampons and ropes). Orizaba’s crater is well-defined and, according to some, the most beautiful among the “7 Volcanic Summits”. To continue your adventure and relax after the ascent, we recommend flying to Cancun for a few days (one of the Top 5 beaches in the world), visiting the great ancient Mayan city Chichen Itza, swimming in cenotes, and simply enjoying the Caribbean coast! Duration - 8 days Group size - 5 participants Location / Country - Mexico Altitude - 5642 m Fitness level - Intermediate Difficulty - Moderate Tour Dates^ 28.02.2026 – 07.03.2026, 07.03.2026 – 14.03.2026, 21.11.2026 – 28.11.2026, 28.11.2026 – 05.12.2026, 19.12.2026 – 26.12.2026,
We will not only immerse ourselves in Mexico’s historical past, where the cultures of the Aztecs and Maya, Spanish conquistadors and colonial heritage intertwine — but also climb the highest volcano in North America — Pico de Orizaba, 5642 m! This ascent is part of the "7 Volcanic Summits" program.
Arrival in Mexico City, group meeting. Evening introduction and gear check. Overnight at a 4* hotel in Mexico City.
Early morning trip to the Teotihuacan Pyramids, including a climb to the Pyramid of the Sun. Optional: sunrise over the pyramids in a hot air balloon (~$150/person). In the afternoon, a walk through Mexico City’s historic center: Zócalo (Main Square) and the largest Cathedral in Central America. Elevation: 2200–2200 m
Transfer by rental vehicle to the base of Pico de Orizaba. Lunch stop in Puebla, a charming town with rich colonial architecture. Overnight in a guesthouse with views of Orizaba. Altitude: 3100 m
After breakfast, drive to Sierra Negra Volcano. A short acclimatization hike to the summit and descent back to the guesthouse. Elevation: 3100 → 4550 → 3100 m
Transfer to Base Camp, Piedra Grande Hut at 4200 m. After settling in, we’ll do an acclimatization hike up to 4500–4600 m. Return to camp for dinner. Elevation: 4200–5642–3100 m*
Second acclimatization day. Depending on group decision or for private groups, an additional high camp at 4700–4800 m can be organized to ease summit day. If the guide decides it’s necessary, we hike up and set up a high camp at 4800 m. In this case, participants will carry their gear or hire porters. Preparation and early dinner before summit day.
Early wake-up, light breakfast, and begin the ascent. The route starts on scree slopes; the glacier begins at around 5000 m. From there, we use crampons and ice axes, moving in rope teams (1 guide per 2 climbers). The climb takes 9–11 hours up, and 4–6 hours down. In good weather, we’ll be rewarded with spectacular views and an impressive volcanic crater! After descent to the hut, we’ll grab a snack and then transfer back to the guesthouse for a hot shower and celebratory dinner. Fireplace, guitar, and a glass of red wine await!
Optional: Continue your journey to Cancun or Tulum for beach time. Choice of hotel, rental car, and excursions is up to each participant and can vary greatly!
